Good cookin' has always been in the blood of the Darroch Family! From back-in-the-days of Grandpa Dan and Grandma Doris breakin' out the skillet at get-togethers with family and friends, down through today with Dan Sr., Momma Barb, Danny Jr., and his wife Adriana.

HaP's PIT BARBECUE...real food, made by real people!


No fast food, corporate chain stuff around here!

HaP's story is as "American Dream" as it gets! Like most good things in life, HaP's REAL PIT BARBECUE started small - a home-built smoker and a sign attached to a shopping cart down in front of the family's car dealership at 24th St and Jefferson in downtown Phoenix.

Back in 1990, Dan Sr. was craving some real BBQ ('cue to afficianados). He took the chassis from from an old GMC truck and built a smoker on top of it. He then parked the smoker in front of his car dealership and opened shop.

Word of mouth grew and soon the local media had embraced this culinary treasure tucked in the heart of Phoenix!


Increasing customer traffic soon required that a move be made to a full-blown trailer setup and some tables for hungry customers to sit at.

This location worked just fine for a couple of years, but the time came for Danny Jr. to leave the car business and begin pursuit of his true love...making tender, melts-in-your-mouth 'cue.

He opened a store at 32nd Ave and Indian School with his wife, Adriana. (Incidentally, this store replaced a failed competitor's barbecue place.) Together Danny and Adriana spent many evenings experimenting and perfecting the perfect barbecuing process.

The new HaP's PIT BARBECUE at 48th St and Washington, 4801 E Washington to be exact, became necessary after the trailer-based business at 24th and Jefferson had overgrown it's customer capacity.

The family grudgingly closed this facility simply to better serve their growing customer base. Just to prove to everyone that we haven't gotten too fancy, we still serve every order in our dining room in a brown paper sack, just like we've always done.
